GLORY TO JESUS CHRIST! GLORY FOREVER!

CHURCH COUNCIL MEETING: The regular monthly meeting will be held next Sunday, June 29 during “Coffee and…” in the parish hall. Council members are requested to make every effort to attend this meeting.

FAST of the Apostles continues till June 29. Let’s try to use this time for learning Apostolic teachings, prayer and fasting. This is also a very appropriate time to go to Confession for those, who receive Communion regularly (every Sunday).

РROPER CHURCH ATTIRE: As hot summer days are approaching, please keep in mind that our Orthodox temple is a sacred place to worship God with reverence and modesty. Please, consider that when you dress to come to church.

COFFEE and… Thank you to Elizabeth Gemski and Youth Ministry for hosting coffee and… last Sunday! Dobrodiyka Oksana Pokotylo hosts today, and Oksana Hroshok will host next Sunday. Thank you for your support…

WHY GO TO CHURCH? Reason #2: Where do we want to go after our life on earth ends? Heaven, right? What does everyone, who is already there, do? What do the angels, the Virgin Mary, and all the Saints do in Heaven? They worship! Our worship is different from other churches including incense, chanting, icons, candles, standing, kneeling, and making the sign of the cross. Some might say that our worship was invented by some bishop or group of monks a few centuries ago. Others say that New Testament worship was spontaneous. However, the reality is that the Divine Liturgy we celebrate these days is essentially the same, at its core, as the Liturgy of the 1st century Christians. Moreover, the Apostles and first disciples were Jews. When they became followers of Christ, they did not invent some new worship of Him. Rather, they took the forms and rituals of the worship they knew, Judaic worship, and gave it a Christian character. Look at Jesus Himself, He observed all the rituals of worship including fasts, feasts, and pilgrimages. Divine Liturgy is rooted in ancient Judaic/Biblical worship. It came from the same commandments given to Moses on Mt. Sinai by God Himself. Therefore, our Orthodox Christian worship is the earthly component of the eternal worship in Heaven. The structure and decoration of our temple (church building) along with the words, prayers, petitions, and rubrics of the services all reflect the nature of Heavenly worship. It’s where we go to practice and prepare ourselves for the eternal worship in Heaven. If we don’t prepare ourselves here, we won’t be able to do it there!

TO CROSS OR NOT TO CROSS: When we cross ourselves, we engage our body in the worship; not only mind and heart. But there are times when it is specifically proper to cross ourselves and times when we should not. Here is a brief list of when to cross and when not to cross. To Cross: When we hear one of the variations of the phrase “Father, Son, and Holy Spirit”; during Trisagion; at the beginning and end of the services and our private prayers; before venerating an icon, the cross, or the Gospel book; upon entering or exiting the temple; when passing in front of the holy Altar Table; when bishop or priest blesses us this cross, chalice or Gospel book. Not to Cross: At the chalice before or after taking Communion (we might hit the chalice with our hand); when the bishop or priest blesses saying, “Peace be with all” (merely bow slightly and receive the blessing).
