GLORY TO JESUS CHRIST! GLORY FOREVER!

CHURCH COUNCIL MEETING: The monthly meeting in the parish hall will be held TODAY during “Coffee and…”. Council members are requested to make every effort to attend this meeting.

SPECIAL CLEANING of our temple is scheduled for this Saturday, June 7, at 4 PM. Please come and help prepare our church for the Pentecostal and First Confession celebrations. Olga Vorona is in charge.

THE TRINITY MEMORIAL Saturday before the Feast of Pentecost is reserved in the Orthodox Church to commemorate all departed pious Christians, with the idea that the occasion of the coming of the Holy Spirit not only consists of the process of the salvation of living humanity, but that the departed also participate in this salvation. Therefore, the Church sends up prayers on Pentecost for the enlivening of all the living, as well as the departed souls by the Holy Spirit, which they were granted while they were still living, because ‘all souls are enlivened by the Holy Spirit.’ In our church, we will serve Divine Liturgy on Saturday, June 7, at 9 AM. Please submit your commemorative lists.

INTERNATIONAL Children’s Day, which is celebrated today, will be marked today with a special prayer for children of Ukraine – those who have suffered injury and displacement during war, and especially, those who have been abducted by russians and forcibly transferred to russian territory. They kidnaped at least 19,546 children of Ukraine.

THE FIRST Ecumenical Council was held in Nicea in A.D. 325 and set a pattern for all later Ecumenical Councils. It primarily addressed the heresy of Arianism (producing the original version of the Nicene Creed) and set a universal pattern for calculating the date of Pascha. The council was summoned by the Emperor St. Constantine the Great, who desired unity in the Empire and thus called the Church’s bishops together to settle the raging heresy of Arianism, the doctrine that Jesus Christ was a created being and therefore not truly the one God. The First Council of Nicea assembled on May 20, 325. Besides the question of Arianism, the First Ecumenical Council also addressed a number of other concerns. Of particular note is the matter of the Paschalion, the method for the calculation of the celebration of Pascha. Up to this point, there had been a number of different methods for determining Pascha’s date, but at Nicea the bishops assembled there chose to accept the Alexandrian practice of making a calculation independent of the Jewish Passover, stipulating also that the Paschal celebration had to follow the vernal equinox. Holy Fathers also confirmed the Canon of Scriptures (The Bible) and adopted many other laws/canons that govern the Orthodox Church to this day.
