THERE IS still time to register your child for summer camping programs at All Saints Camp. The Ukrainian Orthodox Church is blessed with a beautiful property in Northwest Pennsylvania. Why send your child to Orthodox Summer Camp? Meeting and spending time with fellow Orthodox Children, developing bonds with Orthodox mentors, being outside in God’s creation and away from technology, living in a safe environment that encourages them to be who they are with no pressures on appearance or status, and having fun all at the same place! Visit uocofusa.org for more information. The last day for registrations is May 15.

LIVES OF THE SAINTS: The Myrrh-bearing women are those women who followed the Lord, along with His Mother. They remained with her during the time of the saving Passion, and anointed the Lord’s body with myrrh. Joseph and Nikodemos asked for and received the Lord’s body from Pilate. They took it down from the Cross, wrapped it in linen cloths and spices, laid it in a tomb, and then placed a great stone over the entrance. According to the Evangelist Matthew (27:57-61), Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Joses (Mark 15:40) were there sitting opposite the sepulcher, and they saw where He had been laid. This other Mary was the Mother of God. Not only were these present, but also many other women, as Saint Luke says (24:10). Today the Church honors Saints Mary Magdalene (July 22), Mary the wife of Cleopas (May 23), Joanna (June 27), Salome, mother of the sons of Zebedee (August 3), Martha and Mary, sisters of Lazarus (June 4), and the Most Holy Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary, who was the stepmother of her husband Joseph’s sons James (October 23) and Joses (October 30). Today we also remember Saint Joseph of Arimathea (July 31), who was a secret disciple (John 19:38), and Saint Nikodemos, who was a disciple by night (John 3:3; 19:38).
What does it mean that the Church is Catholic? The term “catholic” comes from the Greek word “katholikos.” “Katholikos” translates to “universal” or “general.” It is derived from “kata” (according to) and “holos” (whole). The term emphasizes inclusivity and universality in the Christian faith. According to the Orthodox Catechesis, this means two things: First, it accepts all people worldwide without discrimination, as the fulfillment of the commandment: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you…” (Mt 28:19). Second, “catholic” means that the Church has the “Catholic” faith, that is, the fullness of faith in Christ and the Triune God, the true faith, the Orthodox faith. Orthodox Christians understand the word “catholic” to mean “whole, complete, lacking in nothing.” Hence, we mean that the one, holy, and apostolic Church is “whole, complete, and lacking in nothing.” The word “catholic” with a small “c” has nothing whatsoever to do with Roman “Catholic” with a capital “C”. However, in recent times, fewer people understand this distinction when they hear the word “catholic”. When they hear the word “catholic,” they think the parish belongs to the Roman Catholic Church. We had instances in our parish when people questioned our parish’s jurisdiction/denomination, thinking we were under the pope of Rome. To avoid this confusion, we started using the word “universal” recently. The word “soborna” used in the Ukrainian version of the Creed means all parts coming together to form a ‘whole, complete, lacking-in-nothing’ Church. In conclusion, the lack of meaningful words, deficiency of understanding, and changes in word perception bring us this situation: “catholic, or universal”, or actually both…
