MEMORIAL DAY, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in service of the United States of America. Regardless of the exact date or location of its origins, one thing is clear – Memorial Day was borne out of the Civil War and a desire to honor the fallen. It was officially proclaimed on 5 May 1868 by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic. After World War I the holiday changed from honoring just those who died fighting in the Civil War to honoring Americans who died fighting in any war. It’s now observed in every state on the last Monday in May with the Congressional passage of the National Holiday Act of 1971. The “National Moment of Remembrance” resolution was passed on December 28, 2000, which asks that on Memorial Day at 3 p.m. local time, all Americans “To voluntarily and informally observe in their own way a Moment of remembrance and respect, pausing from whatever they are doing for a moment of silence or listening to “Taps.”

CAN Christians celebrate a “Pride” month? In short, NO… According to Christian teaching “pride” is the source of all sins. Pride is selfish, disobedient, and self-righteous. No wonder the first person to exercise pride was the devil, who, being the closest angel to God, rebelled against his Creator. So, questions we should ask ourselves during this month are: What are we really celebrating? Should we, Christians, teach our children that pride is good and needs to be celebrated every year in June? Is pride, not a sin anymore? Is sexual immorality “ok” now?.. As Orthodox Christians, we should counter the celebrated vice of pride with often-scorned virtues of humility and true love… If we love our neighbors as ourselves, we will try to do what is best for them. Can there be anything better than Heaven and eternal life with our Loving Creator? Of cause, not! So, we should humbly remind ourselves and those, who are involved in certain lifestyles that: “… neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor those habitually drunk, nor verbal abusers, nor swindlers, will inherit the Kingdom of God.” (1 Cor. 6, 9-10) It is out of Christian charity that we should pray during this month of “pride”, that all God’s children may “be saved and come to the knowledge of the Truth” (1 Tim. 2, 4). It’s out of our Christian duty that we have to remember the words of St. Paul: “Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness but rather expose them. It is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret… Be very careful, then, how you live – not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore, do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.” (Eph. 5, 11-17)
ЧИ МОЖУТЬ християни святкувати місяць «Гордості»? Коротко кажучи, НІ… Згідно з християнським вченням, «гордість» є джерелом всіх гріхів. Гордість є егоїстичною, неслухняною і самовдоволеною. Не дивно, що першим, хто проявив гордість, був диявол, який, будучи найближчим до Бога ангелом, повстав проти свого Творця. Отже, питання, які ми повинні поставити собі протягом цього місяця: Що ми насправді святкуємо? Чи повинні ми, християни, навчати своїх дітей, що гордість – це добре і її потрібно відзначати щороку в червні? Чи гордість не є гріхом у 21 сторіччі? Чи статева аморальність не є розпусною гріховністю тепер?.. Як православні християни, ми повинні протистояти гріху гордині і розпусній сексуальності, чеснотами, які часто зневажаються у цьому світі, такими як смирення і справжня любов… Якщо ми любимо своїх ближніх, як самих себе, то будемо намагатися робити те, що для них найкраще. Чи може бути щось краще, ніж Небо і вічне життя з нашим Люблячим Творцем? Звичайно, ні! Отже, ми повинні смиренно нагадати собі і тим, хто веде певний спосіб життя, що: «… ні розпусники, ні ідолопоклонники, ні перелюбники, ні гомосексуалісти, ні злодії, ні жадібні, ні п’яниці, ні словесні кривдники, ні шахраї не успадкують Царства Божого». (1 Кор. 6, 9-10). Християнське милосердя спонукає нас молитися в цей місяць «гордині», щоб усі Божі діти «спаслися і прийшли до пізнання Істини» (1 Тим. 2, 4). Як християни, ми повинні пам’ятати слова святого апостола Павла: «Не майте нічого спільного з безплідними ділами темряви, а викривайте їх. Соромно навіть згадувати про те, що роблять непокірні таємно… Отож, будьте дуже обережні з тим, як ви живете – не як немудрі, а як мудрі, використовуючи кожну нагоду, бо дні лукаві. Тому не будьте нерозумними, але зрозумійте, яка воля Господня». (Ефес. 5, 11-17).
