HOLODOMOR: November is Holodomor remembrance month. Between 1932 and 1934, at least 7 million Ukrainians were starved to death. Today, we will remember them during Liturgy with a special litany.
NATIVITY FAST started this past Wednesday, November 15, and continues till Monday, December 25. Let’s journey through this sacred season with a renewed personal commitment to fasting, prayer, works of Christian charity, and frequent participation in the sacramental and liturgical life of the Church according to the teachings of our Lord, God and Savior Jesus Christ.

GENERAL GUIDELINES FOR THE NATIVITY FAST: Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays of this fast are Strict Fast days. On these days, we abstain from meat, dairy, fish with backbones, fowl, alcoholic beverages, and olive oil. Tuesdays and Thursdays of the fast are Wine and Oil days. On these days, the fasting discipline is relaxed a bit to permit wine and olive oil. Saturdays and Sundays of the fast are Fish, Wine, and Oil days. On these days, the fast is relaxed even more to permit fish with backbones in addition to wine and oil. The Eve of the Feast, December 24, however, is always kept as a Strict Fast day. Foods that are permitted on all days are vegetables, fruits, grains, nuts, and shellfish. Please remember that abstaining from food during this preparation period does us no good if we do not also, as St. John Chrysostom teaches us, fast with: ”… the eye and the ear and the feet and the hands and all the members of our bodies. Let the hands fast by being free of avarice. Let the feet fast, by ceasing to run after sin. Let the eyes fast, by disciplining them not to glare at that which is sinful. Let the ear fast, by not listening to evil talk and gossip. Let the mouth fast from foul words and unjust criticism. For what good is it if we abstain from birds and fishes, but bite and devour our brothers?”

У ці дні ми утримуємося від м’яса, молочних продуктів, риби з хребтом, птиці, алкогольних напоїв, та олії. Вівторок та четвер посту – це дні вина та олії. У ці дні дисципліна посту трохи пом’якшується, щоб дозволити вино та олію. Субота та неділя посту – це дні риби, вина та олії. У ці дні піст послаблюється ще більше, щоб дозволити рибу з хребтом на додаток до вина та олії. Однак переддень свята, 24 грудня, завжди дотримується як день суворого посту. Продукти, які дозволені в усі дні – це овочі, фрукти, зернові, горіхи та молюски. Будь ласка, пам’ятайте, що утримання від їжі в цей період приготування не принесе нам ніякої користі, якщо ми також, як навчає нас святитель Іоанн Златоуст, не постимо: «… оком, вухом, ногами, і руками, і всіма членами нашого тіла. Нехай руки постять, вільні від скупості. Нехай ноги постять, переставши бігти за гріхом. Нехай очі постять, повчаючи їх, щоб вони не дивилися на грішне. Нехай вухо постить, не слухаючи лихих розмов і пліток. Нехай уста завмирають від нецензурних слів і несправедливої критики. Бо яка користь, коли ми стримуємося від птахів та риб, а кусаємо та пожираємо братів наших?»

UOL: Thank you to all who donated to our Christmas projects. St. Nicholas: Three boxes of toys, small clothing items, and candy were sent to Eleos-Dnipro. His Grace Archbishop Daniel gave us a contact person at this charitable organization. Operation Christmas Child: On Saturday 11/11 we helped pack 318 ‘shoe boxes’ with toys and clothing items, including our donations, at the Cheshire Bible School. These will be sent to children of the world including Ukraine. School Supplies Project: The principal of the school to whom the packages were sent also gave some of our supplies to a small school in northern Ukraine, Irsha village. God Bless You.

Church School classes will be held today.
Congratulations to Matvii Shpilchuk, whose patron saint’s day, St. Matthew the Evangelist, was observed on November 16. Matvii will be celebrating with his classmates today. The second-grade class, whose patron saint’s day is St. Andrew the First-Called (November 30), will celebrate the day next Sunday, November 26.
Fr. Andrii will be hearing confessions from students in grades 4, 5, and 6 after Divine Liturgy TODAY. Children are to remain in the church after confession and will return to the Church School with their teacher after all of the students in their class have finished.
Our annual Advent collection of toys for disadvantaged children in the Greater New Britain area begins today and will end on December 17. Please donate new, unwrapped toys in the collection boxes in the church hall and sign a star on the icon above the boxes. Please be generous. Thank you.
