UOL Project: Sadly, schools and learning in Ukraine have been affected by the massive indiscriminate destruction of this unjust war. In accordance with the mission of the Ukrainian Orthodox League Dedicated to Our Church+Devoted to Its Youth, we are working with fellow parishioner Iryna Dmytryshyn, who is in contact with a school principal in Ukraine, to send school supplies to Borozenske village, Kherson region, southeastern Ukraine. During July and August, we will be collecting backpacks, pens, pencils, pencil sharpeners, erasers, pencil cases/pouches, crayons, coloring books, stickers, items for playtime (such as small balls, jump ropes, outside chalk, puzzles, games), also laptop computers and tablets, and monetary donations. Please place your items in the box in the church hall. Let us through the Love of Christ show these innocent children that we care. Thank you! The True Meaning of the Word “CATHOLIC” in the Creed: “In One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church.” The word “catholic” means “universal” as referring to the Church of all times, peoples, and places, Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but Christ is all and in all (Col. 3:11). It comes from the Greek katholikos, meaning “throughout the whole.” The Creed’s language thus expresses the universality of the Church, which cannot be confined by ethnicity, geography, culture, or area, but speaks to the worldwide people of God throughout the ages. It doesn’t mean that everyone on earth without exception is a part of the Church, but that whoever repents of their sins and trusts in Christ will be saved, no matter who they are, where they come from, or what they’ve done (Acts 2:21; Romans 10:9–13). A celebrated definition of “catholic” in the early Church was given by St. Vincent of Lerins, the 5th century monastic Father of Gaul, who in his Communitorium says: “Every care should be taken to hold fast to what has been believed everywhere, always, and by all. That is truly and properly ‘catholic,’ as indicated by the force and etymology of the name itself, which comprises everything truly universal”. The name “catholic” has been elevated and appropriated by the “Roman Catholic” church, but the teaching “that has been believed everywhere, always, and by all” of the early Church has been preserved in the Orthodox Church, which even to this day can be and still is called “catholic.” The Roman Catholic (Western) church separated from the True Church in the year 1054 after changing the Creed and wrongly claiming supremacy of the Bishop of Rome (Pope) over the other bishops. Drifting further from its origin, the Western church was then shattered into a myriad of sects by the Protestant Reformation. However, in Ukraine, the Balkans, the Middle East, and elsewhere, the True Apostolic Church continued to flourish, preserving the Faith pure and unchanged. Today this Church is known as the Orthodox Church. It is a haven for those seeking Christ’s truth and salvation.

A reminder that the donations from the coffee hour will go to the Youth Ministry instead of the Scholarship Committee from now through September 3. The Youth Ministry sponsors both a Halloween party and a Pre-Lenten party, mini-golfing and bowling events, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day treats, gifts for Church School graduates, greeting cards and gifts for young adults and shut-ins, decorating the trees, church hall and caroling at Christmas and placing flags on veterans’ graves for Memorial Day. All of the children of the parish are invited to participate in our activities which are solely funded by personal donations and the income from “Coffee and…” Please be generous.
