WHY DO WE BLESS flowers, herbs, and seeds on the feast-day of the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos? The Tradition of the Orthodox Church states that when Mary, the Mother God, fell asleep, all the Apostles, except Thomas, came together in Jerusalem. Amid divine and heavenly praises, they commended her soul into the hands of God and placed her body in a small tomb in Gethsemane. When Thomas arrived on the third day, the other Apostles opened the tomb so he could venerate the body that had given birth to Christ. When they opened the tomb, the body of the Mother of God, was not there, in its place was a winding linen sheet and the most beautiful and sweet-smelling flowers. Mary’s body had been taken up into the Heavens by her Son. In remembrance of the event, flowers have been blessed from the earliest times. Besides filling our homes with a sweet aroma, these blessed flowers and herbs are known for their ability to protect our homes from the workings of the devil. Over time seeds and herbs that were used for medicinal purposes were also blessed, in commemoration of the many healings and blessings that were bestowed upon the pilgrims at Mary’s tomb.
