INDEPENDENCE day of Ukraine: Tomorrow, Monday, August 24, marks the 35th anniversary of Ukraine’s independence. At the end of Divine Liturgy today, the choir will sing a hymn asking God to bless and protect Ukraine in this time of war and genocide. ДЕНЬ Незалежності України: завтра, 24 серпня, виповнюється 35 років від дня проголошення незалежності України. Наприкінці Божественної Літургії сьогодні хор і ми всі заспіваємо пісню-молитву, в якій попросимо Бога поблагословити й захистити Україну в цей час війни та геноциду.
29 СЕРПНЯ відзначається як День пам’яті захисників України, які загинули в боротьбі за незалежність, суверенітет і територіальну цілісність держави. Цю дату встановлено у 2019 році на згадку про Іловайську трагедію 2014 року — день найбільших втрат української армії під час виходу з оточення під Іловайськом на Донбасі. Офіційним символом пам’яті є квітка соняха, оскільки бої та розстріл українських колон тоді відбувалися саме на полях стиглих соняшників. Ми вшануємо пам’ять всіх українських героїв заупокійною Літургією о 9:00. Приходьте, помолимося і віддамо їм шану!

The cleaning will take place on Saturday, August 29, starting at 10:00 AM. The Beheading of the Holy Glorious Prophet, Forerunner, and Baptist John is commemorated on August 29. The Beheading of the Prophet, Forerunner of the Lord, John the Baptist: The Evangelists Matthew (Mt.14:1-12) and Mark (Mark 6:14-29) provide accounts of the martyred end of John the Baptist in the year 32 after the Birth of Christ. Following the Baptism of the Lord, Herod Antipas, the Tetrarch (ruler of one-fourth of the Holy Land) and governor of Galilee, locked up Saint John the Baptist in prison. The prophet of God, John, openly denounced Herod for having left his lawful wife and cohabitated with Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip. On his birthday, Herod made a feast for dignitaries, elders, and a thousand chief citizens. Salome, Herod’s daughter, danced before the guests and charmed Herod. In gratitude to the girl, he swore to give her whatever she asked, up to half his kingdom. The vile girl, on the advice of her wicked mother Herodias, asked that she be given the head of John the Baptist on a platter. Herod became apprehensive, for he feared the wrath of God for the murder of a prophet, whom he had earlier regarded. He also feared the people, who loved the holy Forerunner. But because of the guests and his careless oath, he gave orders to cut off the head of Saint John and gave it to Salome. According to Tradition, the mouth of the dead preacher of repentance once more opened and proclaimed: “Herod, you should not have the wife of your brother Philip.” Salome took the platter with the head of Saint John and gave it to her mother. The frenzied Herodias repeatedly stabbed the tongue of the prophet with a needle and buried his holy head in an unclean place. But the pious Joanna, wife of Herod’s steward Chuza, buried the head of John the Baptist in an earthen vessel on the Mount of Olives, where Herod had a parcel of land. The holy body of John the Baptist was taken that night by his disciples and buried. The judgment of God came upon Herod, Herodias, and Salome, even during their earthly life. Salome crossed the River Sikoris in winter and fell through the ice. The ice gave way in such a way that her body was in the water, but her head was trapped above the ice. It was similar to how she once had danced with her feet upon the ground, but now she flailed helplessly in the icy water. She was trapped until the sharp ice cut through her neck. Her corpse was not found, but they brought the head to Herod and Herodias; they thought they had brought them the head of Saint John the Baptist. The Arab king Aretas, in revenge for the disrespect shown to his daughter (Herod’s wife), made war against Herod. The defeated Herod suffered the wrath of the Roman emperor Caligula (37-41) and was exiled first to Gaul, then to Spain. The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist, a Feast day established by the Church, is also a strict fast day because of the grief of Christians at the violent death of the saint.

Church School will begin on Sunday, September 20. Children who are eligible should be registered in kindergarten through grade 8 in public, private, or homeschool at that level. The child must have at least 1 parent who is a member of this parish. Information will be mailed shortly.

The Youth Ministry mini-golf event will be held next Sunday, August 30, from 11:30 – 1:30 at Safari Golf, 2340 Berlin Turnpike, Berlin. All parish children (K through 12) and young adults are invited to participate in this annual end-of-summer activity. The deck has been reserved, so families are encouraged to bring snacks or picnic lunches.
