ASLEEP IN THE LORD: The Handmaiden of God, Ann Godzyk, strengthened by the Holy Mysteries, fell asleep in the Lord last Sunday evening, June 7. Funeral services were held at our church on Wednesday, June 10. May God grant His Handmaiden, Ann, ETERNAL MEMORY! ВІЧНАЯ ПАМ’ЯТЬ!
BENEFACTORS’ PANAKHYDA: Today, we will gratefully remember those generous parish members who included the church in their wills with a donation of at least $5,000. This money is invested in a Long-Term fund to help provide needed funds for significant church improvement projects. Please consider leaving $5,000 or more to the church in your will. We remember our benefactors by placing their names on a memorial plaque and putting it at the entrance of the church. We ask that ALL parishioners stay for this panakhyda. Please remember these good souls in your prayers. Sometimes, these benefactors no longer have a family to pray for their souls, but we will never forget their Christian charity. These benefactors are: Alice Andrusia, Dorothy Belas, Josephine Burger, Catherine Chyre, Pauline Demetro, John Gontarsky, Mary Karbonik, Catherine Kerelejza, Ann and Joseph Kochanowsky, Sylvia Lindgren, Maria Mashluk, Anne Melnyk, McAloon, Wasyl and Anastajza Platosz, Stephen Platosh, John Prokopec, Jr., Catherine and Stephen Sawka, Anna Sejerman, Michael and Julia Stepanczak, Alice Stone, and Mary Timchiszin.
ALL SAINTS OF UKRAINE: After the Baptism of Ukraine, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church initially venerated the saints of the Byzantine Church. The early Ukrainian Church also venerated Saint Cyril and Saint Methodius, the original missionaries to the Slavs. The first native Rus’ saints were Saints Borys and Hlib, the martyred sons of Volodymyr the Great, who were canonized in the 11th century. Princess Olha and Volodymyr were canonized in 1037–50. Saint Theodosius of the Caves was canonized in 1108, and Saint Anthony of the Caves in the early 13th century. The early monks buried in the Kyivan Cave Monastery (approx 118 in all), who are known only by their first names, were collectively canonized by Metropolitan Petro Mohyla in 1643. The earliest Ukrainian saints were often monks who cared for the sick (eg, Ahapii, Damian of the Caves). Others were Saint Kuksha (a missionary); Nestor the Chronicler; Master Olimpii (an iconographer); and Sviatoslav (Sviatosha), prince of Lutsk. A large number of Church hierarchs became saints, beginning with Stefan of Kyiv, bishop of Volodymyr-Volynskyi; Bishop Yefrem of Pereiaslav; Teoctistos, bishop of Chernihiv; and Cyril of Turiv. Later saints include Metropolitan Petro of Kyiv and Ivan of Suceava, martyred; and Prince Fedir (Teodosii) of Ostroh, killed by Tatars in 1497, and Princess Yuliiana Olshanska (1540), whose remains are associated with circumstances related to a number of miracles. Under Polish occupation, Orthodox saints from this period include Afanasii, the Ihumen of Berest, who was martyred by the Poles for his support of Bohdan Khmelnytsky; Iov the miracle worker of Pochaiiv; and Makariy, the Ihumen of Kaniv, who was killed by the Turks in 1678. Many other Saints had been produced by the Ukrainian nation; now it is our turn…
