The early\u00a0<\/span>monks<\/span><\/a>\u00a0buried in the\u00a0<\/span>Kyivan Cave Monastery<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(approx 118 in all), who are known only by their first names, were collectively canonized by\u00a0<\/span>Metropolitan<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span>Petro Mohyla<\/span><\/a>\u00a0in 1643. The earliest Ukrainian\u00a0saints were often monks who cared for the sick (eg, Ahapii, Damian of the Caves). Under Polish occupation, Orthodox\u00a0saints from this period include Afanasii, the Ihumen\u00a0of\u00a0Berest, who was martyred by the Poles for his support of Bohdan Khmelnytsky; Iov the miracle worker of\u00a0Pochaiiv;\u00a0and Makariy, the Ihumen of <\/span>Kaniv<\/span><\/a>, who was killed by the Turks in 1678.
