Regardless of the exact date or location of its origins, one thing is clear \u2013 Memorial Day was borne out of the Civil War and a desire to honor the fallen. It was officially proclaimed on 5 May 1868 by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic. After World War I the holiday changed from honoring just those who died fighting in the Civil War to honoring Americans who died fighting in any war. It&#8217;s now observed in every state on the last Monday in May with the Congressional passage of the National Holiday Act of 1971. The \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usmemorialday.org\/?p=97\">National Moment of Remembrance<\/a>\u201d resolution was passed on December 28, 2000, which asks that on Memorial Day at 3 p.m. local time, all Americans \u201cTo voluntarily and informally observe in their own way a Moment of remembrance and respect, pausing from whatever they are doing for a moment of silence or listening to &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.west-point.org\/taps\/Taps.html\">Taps<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>The IRIS<\/strong> Refuge Center will conduct classes at Trinity on Main in Middletown this summer. \u0421all Madeline at 203-988-3937 to make arrangements. In short, NO&#8230; According to Christian teaching \u201cpride\u201d is the source of all sins. Pride is selfish, disobedient, and self-righteous. No wonder the first person to exercise pride was the devil, who, being the closest angel to God, rebelled against his Creator. So, questions we should ask ourselves during this month are: What are we really celebrating? Should we, Christians, teach our children that pride is good and needs to be celebrated every year in June? Is pride, not a sin anymore? Is sexual immorality \u201cok\u201d now?.. As Orthodox Christians, we should counter the celebrated vice of pride with often-scorned virtues of humility and true love\u2026 If we love our neighbors as ourselves, we will try to do what is best for them. Can there be anything better than Heaven and eternal life with our Loving Creator? Of cause, not! So, we should humbly remind ourselves and those, who are involved in certain lifestyles that: \u201c\u2026\u00a0neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals,\u00a0nor thieves, nor\u00a0<em>the<\/em>\u00a0greedy, nor those habitually drunk, nor verbal abusers, nor swindlers, will\u00a0inherit the Kingdom of God.\u201d (1 Cor. 6, 9-10) It is out of Christian charity that we should pray during this month of \u201cpride\u201d, that <u>all God\u2019s children<\/u> may \u201cbe saved and come to the knowledge of the Truth\u201d (1 Tim. 2, 4). It\u2019s out of our Christian duty that we have to remember the words of St. Paul: \u201cHave nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness\u00a0but rather expose them.\u00a0It is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret\u2026 Be very careful, then, how you live &#8211; not as unwise but as wise,<sup>\u00a0<\/sup>making the most of every opportunity,\u00a0because the days are evil.
