He was born when our Lord Jesus Christ yet lived upon the earth. The parents of Pancratius were natives of Antioch. Hearing the good news of Jesus Christ, Pancratius’ father took his young son with him and went to Jerusalem in order to see the great Teacher for himself. The miracles astonished him, and when he heard the divine Teaching, he then believed in Christ as the Son of God. He became close with the disciples of the Lord, especially with the holy Apostle Peter. It was during this period that young Pancratius got to know the holy Apostle Peter. After the Ascension of the Savior, one of the Apostles came to Antioch and baptized the parents of Pancratius together with all their household. When the parents of Pancratius died, he left behind his inherited possessions and went to Pontus and began to live in a cave, spending his days in prayer and deep spiritual contemplation. The holy Apostle Peter, while passing through those parts, visited Pancratius at Pontus. He took him along to Antioch, and then to Sicily, where the holy Apostle Paul then was. There the holy Apostles Peter and Paul made Saint Pancratius Bishop of Taormina in Sicily. Saint Pancratius toiled zealously for the Christian enlightenment of the people. In a single month, he built a church where he celebrated Divine services. The number of believers quickly grew, and soon almost all the people of Taormina and the surrounding cities accepted the Christian Faith. Saint Pancratius governed his flock peacefully for many years. However, pagans plotted against the saint and seizing an appropriate moment, they captured and stoned him. Thus, Saint Pancratius ended his life as a martyr. The saint’s relics are in the church named for him in Rome.

The True Meaning of the Word “CATHOLIC” in the Creed: “In One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church.” The word “catholic” means “universal” as referring to the Church of all times, peoples, and places, Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but Christ is all and in all (Col. 3:11). It comes from the Greek katholikos, meaning “throughout the whole.” The Creed’s language thus expresses the universality of the Church, which cannot be confined by ethnicity, geography, culture, or area, but speaks to the worldwide people of God throughout the ages. It doesn’t mean that everyone on earth without exception is a part of the Church, but that whoever repents of their sins and trusts in Christ will be saved, no matter who they are, where they come from, or what they’ve done (Acts 2:21; Romans 10:9–13). A celebrated definition of “catholic” in the early Church was given by St. Vincent of Lerins, the 5th century monastic Father of Gaul, who in his Communitorium says: “Every care should be taken to hold fast to what has been believed everywhere, always, and by all. That is truly and properly ‘catholic,’ as indicated by the force and etymology of the name itself, which comprises everything truly universal”. The name “catholic” has been elevated and appropriated by the “Roman Catholic” church, but the teaching “that has been believed everywhere, always, and by all” of the early Church has been preserved in the Orthodox Church, which even to this day can be and still is called “catholic.” The Roman Catholic (Western) church separated from the True Church in the year 1054 after changing the Creed and wrongly claiming supremacy of the Bishop of Rome (Pope) over the other bishops. Drifting further from its origin, the Western church was then shattered into a myriad of sects by the Protestant Reformation. However, in Ukraine, the Balkans, the Middle East, and elsewhere, the True Apostolic Church continued to flourish, preserving the Faith pure and unchanged. Today this Church is known as the Orthodox Church. It is a haven for those seeking Christ’s truth and salvation.

A SPECIAL THANK YOU: The Angels Club thanks Pani Matka Oksana Pokotylo for donating her recent winnings back to the Angels Club Treasury. May God grant Pani Matka Oksana Many Blessed Years!

+ + + CHURCH SCHOOL AND YOUTH MINISTRY NEWS + + +

A reminder that the donations from the coffee hour will go to the Youth Ministry instead of the Scholarship Committee from now through September 3. The Youth Ministry sponsors parties, mini-golfing and bowling events, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day treats, gifts for Church School graduates, greeting cards and gifts for young adults and shut-ins, decorating the trees, church hall and caroling at Christmas and placing flags on veterans’ graves for Memorial Day. All of the children of the parish are invited to participate in our activities which are solely funded by personal donations and the income from “Coffee and…” Please be generous.

Warm thanks go to Joyce Dygus for her generous donation of $25 to help defray the cost of postage for sending Sunday bulletins to shut-ins.
